River Kwai
|
A little over 120 kilometers northwest of Bangkok is a city of Kanchanaburi,
located along a junction of rivers, including the world famous River Kwai. Infamous as the place where thousands of allied prisoners of war - and many more Thais - died of disease and exhaustion during World War II. The prisoners were used to
build a railway bridge over the river. The bridge is still standing; although
the two middle spands have been rebuilt. There is a museum in memory
of those who died during times of suffering - a place of great emotion
for all those who abhor the horrors of war. One of the kingdom's greatest
historical sites.
